One of my first web design projects, BlockByBlock, was created for a talented lino print artist based in South London. The goal was to design an artistic and functional WordPress website that reflected their craft while providing a platform to sell prints and promote block printing workshops.
A Design That Reflects the Brand
The artist, who specialises in lino prints and block printing workshops, wanted a website with a bold, graphic, and “blocky” aesthetic to reflect the brand name as well as the style of the art. While they had minimal branding ready—just a logo and no defined color palette—I used their striking photography of tools, prints, and paper as inspiration to craft a site with artistic paper tones and a professional, elevated feel.
Selling Online with WooCommerce
To help the artist grow their business, I built the website using WordPress and WooCommerce, making it a fully functional e-commerce platform. Customers can now browse and purchase lino prints and book workshops directly online. I also trained the client on how to update the site, add new products, and manage orders independently.
WooCommerce is the ideal e-commerce tool for those starting out on their e-commerce jouney, it’s free, easy to self manage and allows a versatile range of products and payment types. While platforms like shopify may offer a slicker backend management system and more nuanced features, for a client with a limited product range and still growing as a vendor I would always recommend starting out with WooCommerce.
Reliable and Affordable Hosting for Small Businesses
The client opted for my affordable hosting plan, which costs just £50/year and includes Elementor Pro for seamless design updates. I host on Hostinger, ensuring the website runs quickly and reliably, with daily backups included for added security.
A Website That Works for Artists and Creatives
The final result, BlockByBlock.me, is a fast, functional, and visually engaging website that perfectly showcases the artist’s work and services. It’s a great example of how thoughtful web design can help artists and creatives in South London grow their businesses online.
